DURHAM SENIOR DIVAS 'N DUDE CHEERLEADERS The Durham Senior Divas Cheerleaders were organized in February of 2004, and they continue to excite crowds throughout the Triangle and surrounding counties as they perform their high-spirited cheers! They range in age from 59-82! They have competed in the Durham and North Carolina State Senior Games where they have won the bronze, silver, and two gold medals since they started to compete in 2006! They have received special recognitions from UNC-TV, Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., NBC-17, and AARP for their contributions and involvement in community activities. They have participated in walk-a-thons, parades in Durham and Raleigh, UNC-TV Telethons, UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine Gerontology Annual Conferences, Health Fairs, Press conferences, senior parties for various organizations, the Arts and Cultural Festival in Fuquay, the Durham Centerfest and other community affairs – including Lee County. They have been featured on the websites and You Tube for UNC-Chapel Hill. The Divas have given lectures to medical students since 2005 as they stress the importance of exercise and proper nutrition in the aging process. They were also featured on the website for N.C. State University. Articles in The July 2007 edition of Our State Magazine and the N.C. State University Website focused on the Divas’ involvement in the N.C. Senior Games. The squad performed during halftime at the 2007 and 2008 M.E.A.C. basketball tournaments at the RBC Center. They brought excitement to the crowd as they performed on the Tom Joyner Morning Radio Show in March of 2007. They continued their promotion of fun and fitness as they “shook their pom-poms” at the NBC – Channel 17 Health Extravaganza in Raleigh, the Harvest Feast at the RBC Center, and the 2007 WRAL-TV Golden Celebration at the Progress Energy Center in Raleigh. They focus on the saying - “You don’t stop playing because you grow old…. You grow old because you stop playing!" Under the leadership of their enthusiastic coach, Ms. Shawnta Wright, and Team Captain, Louise Gooche, the Divas prove to be the “crowd pleaser" for any event. But wait, the squad now has a male member - the Durham Senior Dude! The Divas and Dude are sponsored by the Downtown Durham YMCA. |
